In implementation of the directives of the President of the Republic, Mr Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at strengthening Algerian–Italian economic cooperation, and on the sidelines of the conference organised by the Bank of Algeria in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund under the theme “North Africa – Connecting Continents and Creating Opportunities”, Dr Mourad Adjal, Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, on Thursday, 5 February 2026, received the Italian Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, Mr Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. This meeting took place within the framework of the visit by the Italian Minister and his accompanying delegation to Algeria to participate in the conference proceedings.
The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, was attended by the Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Algeria, Mr Alberto Cutillo, as well as a number of senior officials from both ministries. On this occasion, Dr Mourad Adjal highlighted the depth of the historical and economic relations between the two countries, particularly in the energy sector, and reaffirmed Algeria’s determination to deepen and strengthen cooperation with Italy.
The Minister outlined the vision of the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, reflecting Algeria’s approach with regard to the project to interconnect the Algerian and Italian electricity grids via a submarine cable, with the aim of supplying the Italian and European markets with electricity. He emphasised Algeria’s significant potential in electricity generation, particularly its strategic orientation towards renewable energy production. In this context, the Minister underlined the importance of implementing this project for Italy, notably in terms of its technical and economic viability, in line with the win–win principle.
In another context, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies referred to the “South Corridor” project as a major initiative for the transport of green hydrogen, stressing the need to accelerate its implementation on the ground. He also proposed organising a meeting bringing together the countries concerned by the project — Italy, Germany, Austria and Tunisia — in the coming months in Algeria, with a view to taking the necessary decisions to ensure the effective realisation of this project.
For his part, Mr Gilberto Pichetto Fratin expressed his country’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Algeria, affirming that Algeria is a reliable partner. He further highlighted the significant role played by Algeria as a dependable energy supplier in the Mediterranean region, particularly to Italy.
