Under the co-chairmanship of the Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mourad Adjal, and the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Mr. Dan Jørgensen, on the European side, the sixth High-Level Political Dialogue on Energy between Algeria and the European Union was held today, Thursday, 12 February 2026, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies in Algiers.
This meeting falls within the framework of the dialogue mechanisms established under the strategic partnership between Algeria and the European Union in the field of energy, with the aim of addressing various topics of mutual interest and reviewing the progress achieved in energy cooperation and its future prospects, in light of the last meeting held on 4 and 5 October 2023 in Brussels, Belgium; particularly in the areas of electricity interconnection, renewable energy, hydrogen development, energy efficiency, and the supply of natural gas to Europe.
In his opening remarks, delivered in the presence of several senior officials from both ministries and representatives of the European Union, the Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, emphasized that this meeting reflects the depth of the strategic partnership between Algeria and the European Union and confirms the shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector in a manner that serves the interests of both parties and responds to current global challenges, characterized by geopolitical tensions, profound transformations in energy markets, and increasing demands related to climate transition. He also highlighted the opportunities provided by this dialogue to consolidate cooperation and assess achievements, stressing the need to ensure the sustainability of this partnership between Algeria and the European Union.
For his part, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Dr. Mourad Adjal—whose sector will be responsible for following up and continuing the dialogue with the European Union in the future—underscored the importance of these exchanges, noting that they have significantly contributed to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector by deepening mutual understanding of the energy policies and strategies of both parties. This provides a distinctive framework for exchanging perspectives on the future of the energy market, particularly in light of Algeria’s considerable potential in conventional energy production as well as new and renewable energies.
In the same context, the Minister stressed that dialogue among all stakeholders has become more important than ever, pointing to the existence of numerous proposed topics for discussion centered on shared challenges, such as ensuring energy supply security and opening investment opportunities that would enhance stability and prosperity in the Mediterranean region, as well as contributing to combating climate change through achieving greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. He noted that prospects for cooperation are promising given the significant potential for investment and technological partnerships between Algerian companies and their counterparts in the European Union, particularly in the fields of electricity, renewable energy, development of interconnection networks, hydrogen, and energy efficiency. He reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness and commitment to continue dialogue activities in the same spirit of cooperation, based on constructive exchange and openness, enabling the expansion, development, and diversification of areas of cooperation.
For his part, the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Mr. Dan Jørgensen, reaffirmed the European side’s commitment to cooperation and partnership with Algeria, which he described as a reliable and sustainable energy partner. He noted the strong interest of European countries in Algeria’s experience in the production of clean energy and expressed the European Union’s willingness to support Algeria in this direction, thereby strengthening mutual cooperation between Algeria and EU Member States. He also praised the outcomes and results of previous meetings and exchanges, in which Algeria played a key role in reinforcing and advancing this cooperation.
Following the presentation of the outcomes of previous meetings and discussions and their positive results, both parties expressed satisfaction with the level of progress achieved in implementing the partnership, which has contributed to enhancing mutual understanding on issues of common interest. Both sides also emphasized Algeria’s role as a reliable and sustainable supplier of natural gas, and the European Union’s role as a reliable provider of clean energy technologies and solutions, particularly in the areas of electricity networks, electrical equipment, and system integration, as well as in supporting Algeria’s energy transition in accordance with high standards of quality and reliability. They further stressed that Algeria possesses numerous competitive advantages, including its substantial natural and human resources, as well as significant energy infrastructure, enabling the creation of a favorable ecosystem for the development of low-carbon technologies, particularly through the advancement of hydrogen value chains and renewable energy, allowing Algeria to strengthen its position as a key supplier in this field.
In conclusion, both parties expressed their satisfaction with the positive atmosphere that characterized the various meetings and consultations, as well as their appreciation for the progress achieved within the framework of bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, which benefits both sides. They reaffirmed their commitment to continuing to strengthen and consolidate the partnership within the framework of the High-Level Energy Dialogue.
