The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Dr. Mourad Adjal, received on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at the Ministry's headquarters, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, who is visiting Algeria in his capacity as President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). The meeting took place in the presence of Ministry executives and representatives of the Institute.
This meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the prospects for enhancing cooperation between Algeria and the Global Green Growth Institute, particularly in areas related to energy transition, sustainable development, promoting the use of green energies, and improving energy efficiency, in line with Algeria's strategic orientations aimed at building a green and sustainable economy.
The discussions also addressed ways to develop the technical and institutional partnership between the energy and renewable energies sector and the Global Green Growth Institute, especially in preparing studies and programs related to the energy transition, developing renewable energy projects, green hydrogen, and managing water resources associated with energy projects.
In his speech, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Dr. Mourad Adjal, affirmed the sector's commitment, as the entity in charge of leading the energy transition file at the government level, to implement the directives and instructions of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at enhancing energy security and consolidating the foundations of sustainable development.
The Minister also highlighted Algeria's commitment to continuing the implementation of its energy policy based on striking a balance between ensuring energy security and promoting sustainable economic and social development, by valorizing national resources and expanding the contribution of renewable energies in the national energy mix, in line with national development goals.
In this context, Dr. Mourad Adjal reviewed the most important strategic projects that the sector is working to implement, foremost among them the program to develop 15,000 megawatts of solar photovoltaic energy, the green hydrogen development program, in addition to projects related to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
The Minister also affirmed the Ministry's readiness to work side by side with the teams of the Global Green Growth Institute to prepare a practical and effective roadmap that embodies shared goals and enhances cooperation between the two parties.
For his part, Mr. Ban Ki-moon praised the progress Algeria is making in the field of developing renewable energies and the great potential it possesses, especially in the field of solar energy, expressing the Global Green Growth Institute's readiness to accompany Algeria in implementing its projects and programs aimed at accelerating the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon also called for accompanying and supporting the activities of the Global Green Growth Institute's office in Algeria, enabling it to achieve its goals and missions, and contributing to supporting Algeria's efforts to achieve its goals in the areas of sustainable development, energy transition, and the green economy.
