Dr. Mourad Adjal, Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, supervised on Sunday, May 17, 2026, the opening ceremony of the regional training course on "Principles of Nuclear Forensics." The event is organized by the Nuclear Security Training and Support Center, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held from May 17 to 21, 2026.

This course, which features the participation of an IAEA representative along with experts and specialists from 11 countries, falls within the framework of the Nuclear Security Training and Support Center's contribution to the programs and activities of the International Network of Nuclear Security Training and Support Centers, managed by the IAEA.

In his speech during the opening ceremony—attended by the Chairman of the National Nuclear Safety and Security Authority, the Chairwoman of the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission, the Commissioner for Atomic Energy, as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies and other ministerial sectors—the Minister emphasized that this course represents an opportunity to reaffirm Algeria's permanent commitment to enhancing regional and international cooperation in developing and supporting peaceful uses of nuclear energy programs, particularly for the benefit of African nations.

He also highlighted that Algeria’s hosting of this technical course reflects its continuous keenness to support regional and international cooperation to face challenges related to nuclear security. This is achieved through the exchange of expertise and knowledge under the umbrella of the IAEA, and in accordance with international treaties and agreements related to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, ensuring the protection of individuals, property, and the environment from the risks of radiation emitted by nuclear and radioactive materials.

For his part, Mr. Abdelhamid Mellah, Commissioner for Atomic Energy, explained that this course aims to highlight the importance of nuclear forensics in tackling criminal acts, whether intentional or unintentional, involving nuclear or radioactive materials, radiation sources, or means and facilities associated with these materials, which could threaten the security of people, property, and the environment, or cause damage to related facilities and infrastructure.

The course is conducted by a team of nuclear security experts, including specialists from the IAEA's Division of Nuclear Security, the National Laboratory in the United States of America, the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in addition to experts from the Nuclear Security Training and Support Center in Algeria.

It is worth noting that the course program includes lectures and practical exercises covering several axes, including the sustainability of nuclear forensics institutions and international cooperation mechanisms in this field.
