In implementation of the directives of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at strengthening cooperation with brotherly African countries and consolidating South-South partnership, particularly in the field of energy, and as part of efforts to further activate cooperation and partnership relations with the Republic of Niger, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Dr. Mourad Adjal, held a videoconference meeting on Thursday, 23 July 2026, with his counterpart, the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Niger, Ms. Amadou Haoua, in the presence of officials from both sides.
The meeting provided an opportunity to assess the implementation of the outcomes of previous meetings and review the progress made in various bilateral cooperation projects, particularly those aimed at supporting and developing the electricity sector in the Republic of Niger, within the framework of a shared vision focused on strengthening energy security and developing the electricity infrastructure in this brotherly country.
In this regard, both sides reviewed the progress made in implementing the various areas of cooperation, foremost among them the project to construct a mobile power plant equipped with two gas turbines, with a total capacity of 40 MW (2 × 20 MW), which constitutes one of the key strategic cooperation projects between the two countries.
The meeting also addressed the progress of the study on the electrification of the Agadez region and the reinforcement of the electricity transmission network in both the Agadez region and the city of Niamey, in addition to the project to establish an electrical equipment depot in Niger, one of the projects aimed at supporting local development, providing electrical equipment, and strengthening the country’s technical capacities.
The two ministers also discussed the project to support the Republic of Niger in restructuring its energy sector, as well as the reorganization and restructuring of NIGELEC.
The two sides also discussed prospects for expanding cooperation to include renewable energies, the development of electricity networks, engineering and studies, and the exchange of expertise, thereby strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries and highlighting Algeria’s important role in supporting energy development projects across the African continent.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two ministers expressed their satisfaction with the level of cooperation between the two countries and reaffirmed their determination to pursue coordination and regular monitoring of the various joint projects, as well as to accelerate their implementation, in line with the directives of the leaders of the two countries, reflecting the depth of the fraternal and historic ties between Algeria and Niger and promoting an effective African partnership based on solidarity, knowledge and expertise sharing, and sustainable development.
