In implementation of the directives of the President of the Republic, Mr. AbdelmadjidTebboune, aimed at strengthening Algeria’s presence on the African continent and promoting South-South cooperation, particularly in West Africa, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Dr. Mourad Adjal, held talks via videoconference on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, with the Minister of Energy, Water and Mines of the Republic of Benin, Mr. Edouard Dahome.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the current state and prospects of bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to elevating the bilateral partnership to higher levels, particularly in priority areas, foremost among them the energy sector.

The discussions also addressed the existing cooperation between Sonelgaz Group and the Benin Electricity Community (CEB), with both sides recalling the Memorandum of Understanding signed between them in 2024, which aims to develop cooperation across the various stages of the electricity industry value chain, including training and the transfer of expertise.

On this occasion, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies reaffirmed Algeria’s full readiness to support the Republic of Benin in implementing its energy projects by sharing expertise, providing technical assistance, developing human capacities, and contributing to the development of energy infrastructure. This reflects the sector’s substantial expertise and capabilities covering the various stages of the electricity value chain.

The Minister also highlighted Sonelgaz Group’s industrial capabilities in the manufacturing of electrical equipment, stressing Algeria’s readiness to develop fruitful cooperation in supplying the Beninese market with such equipment and to explore opportunities for marketing these products across the West African region.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continuing coordination and joint efforts to implement the agreements already signed and identify concrete cooperation projects of mutual benefit, thereby contributing to building a model energy partnership between the two countries, in line with the principles of South-South cooperation.
