Under the supervision of the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Dr. Mourad Adjal, the second ministerial meeting of the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SoutH2) was held in Algiers on 1 October 2026, with the participation of the Ministers of Energy of the countries involved in the project: Austria, Germany, Italy and Tunisia, alongside representatives of the institutions and stakeholders concerned with the development of this strategic project.

The event, held at the Abdellatif Rahal International Conference Centre, brought together a number of ministers and senior officials, including Presidential Advisers; the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs; the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons; the Minister of Finance; the Minister of Industry; the State Secretary, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism; the Minister of Environment and Energy Security; and the Tunisian Minister of Equipment and Housing, acting Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, in addition to several ambassadors and heads and representatives of national and international institutions and organizations.

In his opening address, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Dr. Mourad Adjal, emphasized that the Southern Hydrogen Corridor is not merely an energy infrastructure project, but rather a fundamental component of the future hydrogen economy in the Mediterranean basin, given the opportunities it offers to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy and hydrogen, and to support industrial and economic development.

The Minister also highlighted that Algeria possesses significant assets and potential that qualify it to play a central role in this project, particularly its considerable solar potential, energy resources, strategic geographical location, as well as its developed energy infrastructure and industrial and energy expertise.

In this context, the ministers supported the establishment of a dedicated technical secretariat with the assistance of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), which would serve as a platform for coordinating cooperation among partner countries and strengthening private sector involvement in the development of the corridor.

The meeting also reviewed the progress achieved within the framework of the integrated project, the Algeria–Europe Hydrogen Alliance (ALTEH2A), which aims to develop green hydrogen production in Algeria and contribute to supplying the European market. A feasibility study has been launched, covering the identification of potential production sites, the examination of transportation options and the assessment of the European market's potential, with the first results expected to be released in 2027.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views on cooperation and investment opportunities in the energy sector, particularly in the fields of green hydrogen and renewable energy, and to strengthen the partnership between the various stakeholders involved in the Southern Hydrogen Corridor.

On this occasion, Algeria reaffirmed its readiness to continue working with its partners to translate this initiative into concrete action, thereby contributing to strengthening energy security, supporting the transition towards low-carbon energy systems and opening up new prospects for industrial and economic cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

The meeting also witnessed the signing of a joint political declaration of intent on the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SoutH2), through which the participating countries renewed their commitment to strengthening regional and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the field of green hydrogen and supporting the development of a corridor connecting North Africa with Europe's major industrial and energy hubs.
